Show me, please
Ewelina Kolaczek, 2008

Participatory performance on stage

The Performance
An ordinary respectable girl walks onto a stage. She spills numerous bits of makeup onto a table. She sits down, wipes her face clean and neatly arranges the makeup. People are asked one-by-one to sit facing the girl and be her mirror – show her what make-up to choose and how to put it on. When she is all made up, the girl invites everyone to sing a lovely song about it all.

Comments
Show me, please uses the intimacy of teaching and learning to play with one way of communicating personal and social expectations of what we are meant to be and look like. This is a process that begins from the moment that our parents choose our first clothes and carries on through our looking at magazines, watching TV, all the way to: what we’d like our funeral to be like. Here it is a discomfort of display and community.
